March 18, 2017 By SG Leave a Comment

More and more distilleries are selling cask strength single malt whiskies. Due to the growing popularity in the higher-end single malt whiskies, you may wonder – what is the difference between bottle strength and cask strength whisky?

Usually, one look at the label will tell you the difference. Bottle strength whiskies are generally sold around 43% abv, but cask strength single malt whiskies are typically between 55%-60% abv. However, is the alcohol strength the only difference between cask strength whisky and bottle strength?

This article tells you all you need to know about cask strength single malt whisky. You will also find out the best ways to enjoy this type of dram.

What is Cask Strength Single Malt?

As the name implies, cask strength single malt is the whisky that comes straight out of the cask. Distillers don’t add any water to it to reduce the alcohol content. This means that cask strength whiskies have a higher alcohol content and are more intense flavour.

Standard single malt whiskies usually have some water added and may be a blend of whiskies from different barrels in the same distillery.

Why Buy Cask Strength Whiskies?

Usually, cask strength single malt whiskies are reserved for the best, highest-quality single malt whiskies. The whisky straight from the cask generally gives you a better idea of the real taste of the whisky. For many whisky connoisseurs, this gives them the chance to experiment a little with the flavours and become a ‘master blender.’

However, cask whiskies are generally more expensive. This is because distilleries can produce less bottles of single malt per barrel.

How to Enjoy Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky

For many people, cask strength single malt whiskies are too strong to drink straight. So, the best way to drink higher-proof whisky is to add a little water. Every drop of water you put in the whisky will cause subtle changes in the flavour.

So, don’t be afraid to add a little water to your cask strength single malt to really bring out the flavours. This way, you can really enjoy single malt whisky that is sold at cask strength.
